Vinod Khanna was a superstar in the 1970s but then he took a break from Bollywood and joined Osho Ashram in America.
But when the actor returned to India after the dissolution of the ashram, he tried his hand at acting again. However, now his interest in politics had also increased and in 1997 the actor joined BJP.
Vinod Khanna was elected from Gurdaspur constituency of Punjab in the 1998 Lok Sabha elections.
He was re-elected in 1999 and 2004. He was also the Union Minister of Culture and Tourism. Vinod Khanna also became Minister of State in the Ministry of External Affairs.
In a recent conversation with Siddharth Kannan, Ananth Mahadevan revealed that he had once asked Vinod Khanna to contest for the post of Prime Minister but the actor had refused.
Anant said, “Once I told him, ‘Sir, you should stand for the post of Prime Minister of this country.’ We have no objection to a good looking Prime Minister for a change. He said, ‘No Anant, you don’t know. This is a very dangerous game. It’s not as simple as you think. Not as straightforward as you think. I am an MP from Punjab, okay, I am doing my job, but beyond that, it is not easy, even though I am in that position.
Recalling his relationship with the actor, Ananth said, “Till the time of his demise, he used to send me very funny emails of jokes and anecdotes, we remained in touch for a long time.”
